Merje Laiapea, our 2007-2008 GRSP Student from Tartu, Estonia, has completed her school year and returned to Estonia in mid-May 2008. Here are her thoughts that she shared with us after arriving home.
"This year has been incredible.
During this year I have made amazing friends from all over the world who I will stay in contact with forever, I have traveled in Georgia and in the United States, and I have been able to develop myself academically in one of the most respectable universities the University of Georgia. Throughout the two semesters I took different courses, but focused mainly on international affairs. Besides being a student at the University of Georgia, I learned about the American culture and got to know 71 students from all around the world who represent different cultures and who I can forever use as hostels around the world.
I will always remember and cherish Athens downtown, the campus, the football games, student weekends and district conferences, trips to New York, Boston, Washington DC, Florida, San Francisco, the great friends I made, my Rotary Clubs and my host family.
I would like to thank Oconee, Classic City, Oglethorpe and Winder Rotary Clubs for making me a Georgia Bulldog and my host family Tammy, Geof, Lyndsey and Tyler for always being so welcoming, helpful and loving."
Our 2006-2007 GRSP Student is Andrea Cuervo from Colombia, SA. Andrea is a student at the University of Georgia. (See Andrea's comments below dated 4/17/07).
My name is Andrea Cuervo, and I come from Barranquilla, Colombia. I am an Industrial Engineering student at Universidad del Norte, in my fourth year, out of a five year program. I enjoy sports and outdoor activities such as swimming, playing soccer and Scuba diving, which I practice with all my family. I am very close to my family: my father, Santiago, is a Mechanical Engineer, my mother Maria Eugenia, is a Business Administrator, and my brother Juan Pablo, who is 20 years old, studies Journalism. I love reading novels, and learning languages. I speak Spanish, English and Italian, and I am currently learning French and German.
This year has been one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. I have met some of the most interesting people and I feel blessed to be a part of the Georgia Rotary Student Program. I have had the opportunity to travel around the United States in this year and especially around Georgia. I spent Fall Break in Chicago, Winter Break in New York and Spring Break in Mexico. It has been amazing to get to know the southern culture, and the American traditions: such as Thanksgiving. Finally, as a UGA student I have come to appreciate Football, American Football that is, and all I can think now is Go Dawgs!!! I feel that Georgia is a second home, and I want to thank all my sponsoring Clubs, Oconee, Oglethorpe, Winder and Classic City, as well as my host families, who have welcomed me into their lives and helped me to make this year the best of my life.
I plan to go back to Colombia and get my degree in Industrial Engineering. I would like to go to Germany afterwards to get a Master's Degree in Logistics or Quality Control. In the long term, I would like to have my own consulting firm.
